Manchester United plots £50m Maguire move
Manchester United are set to yield to Manager, Jose Mourinho’s clamour for a new defender as he has been concerned about the role Chris Smalling and Phil Jones has played in recent games.
The club’s embarrassing 1-0 loss to Newcastle just a few days ago further asserted the need for a new defender as the backline did poorly.
In January, rivals Manchester City and Liverpool both splashed the cash on centre-backs. City signed Aymeric Laporte for £57m while the Reds took van Dijk from Southampton for a record-breaking £75m.
Thus, it is now likely that the Red Devils are set to toll the same path by bringing in a new defender on the high too as two key centre-backs are on their mind.
Leicester’s Harry Maguire is the number one target as the England International has been in a sensational form for the Foxes since joining them last summer.
However, signing the 24-year old from the former League Champions might cost the Old Trafford club a price in the tune of £50m.
Also, other reports are claiming that in case the move to bring the Leicester defender to Manchester fails to pull through, United might go for a defender Mourinho brought to Real Madrid during his time at the Spanish club.
Rafael Varane joined Madrid in 2011 and he is equally a 24-year old who has turned in series of consistent performance over time.
He is however currently under contract with the Bernabeu club until June 2022.
Since it is expected that Eric Bailly who has been unavailable for the past three months will be fit again by month end after recovering from an ankle surgery, he might be paired with either Argentine, Marcos Rojo or Victor Lindelof till the end of the season as the Manchester United seeks to rebuild its backline to enable it to compete on all fronts next season.
